Kõpu Lighthouse is the best-known sight of Kõrgessaare Parish, one could even say a symbol. There have been debates about the years of the tower’s construction. It is known that as early as the 1490s, the Hanseatic League demanded the erection of a navigational beacon. Construction began in 1504 and continued with breaks until 1540.
For over a hundred years, the beacon was just a 20-meter high barrel without a light, which was visible far out to sea. In 1649, wood began to be burned on the barrel platform. This required over 1000 “sülla” (loads) of wood per year, which local peasants had to deliver. Six men were constantly employed to keep the fire burning. In 1810, the tower came under the crown; stairs were then cut inside the tower, two rooms were built in the upper part along with a lamp room.
For making the light, oil was burned, later petroleum and acetylene. At the beginning of the 20th century, a lantern room was purchased from Paris. In connection with the 450th anniversary of Kõpu Lighthouse, repairs were planned, but the oil paint caused trouble – moisture accumulated under the paint and only found an escape when the plaster fell off. In 1989-90, a strong reinforced concrete shell was poured around the tower to prevent future collapse.
